The 2011 BMW Vision ConnectedDrive Concept Vehicle

BMW Concept VehiclesThe future has already begun. At the 2011 International Motor Show in Geneva the concept vehicle BMW Vision ConnectedDrive will make its world debut from 3rd to 13th of March 2011.

The leading position in the automobile world occupied by BMW in the development of innovative driver assistance systems and mobility services will be further strengthened by this extraordinary concept vehicle.

The BMW Vision ConnectedDrive study demonstrates current and future methods of mobile networking in a particularly focused way. The design and technology of this spectacular roadster are aimed at making the vehicle an integral part of a networked world.

Comfort, safety and the infotainment experience in the vehicle can be precisely optimised by the innovative functionality, individually tailored to suit the requirements of both the driver and passenger. New technologies and design concepts are employed to add even more facets to the unmistakable BMW driving pleasure.

Captivating innovation – BMW Vision ConnectedDrive.
Pioneering technology heightens driving pleasure. BMW Vision ConnectedDrive makes its case in a most persuasive way, presenting immediately-mesmerising, intelligent solutions. The character of this concept study, presented as a two-seater roadster, is one of a mobile component in a networked world, both in design as well as by virtue of extensive technological innovations.

BMW demonstrates with this vehicle the unique potential that can be realised by both the current and future developments in BMW ConnectedDrive, optimising comfort, safety and the enjoyment of infotainment in the vehicle.

The boundless opportunities to attain even more driving pleasure by means of intelligent networks is demonstrated most impressively at the Geneva Motor Show by the world premiere of BMW Vision ConnectedDrive, by the design of the bodywork and interior of the concept vehicle, an inspiring light installation, a new display and operating concept and a multimedia presentation at the show.

The design embodies the bond between the driver and the vehicle and the dialogue between the driver and the passenger as well as the interaction of the occupants of the car with the environment. The functional areas of BMW ConnectedDrive are symbolised on three levels – comfort, safety and infotainment. The elementary exchange of data and information for all three functional areas is visualised by an intricately complex light installation and presentation at the exhibition?

Affected BMW Recall for 2010: 348,000 Cars Worldwide

PRESS RELEASE

BMW of North America has submitted a letter to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) announcing the voluntary recall of V8 and V12-powered BMW 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, and BMW Alpina B7 models produced between the 2002 and 2010 model years.

In affected vehicles, a small leak may develop in the power braking system, causing a vacuum loss and consequent reduction of power braking assistance. Mechanical braking will still be available to slow and stop the vehicle.

Drivers who experience reduced power braking assistance should immediately schedule a service appointment with an Authorized BMW Center. Mechanical braking will continue to operate on affected vehicles.

Once BMW distributes the necessary replacement parts to Authorized BMW centers, customers with affected vehicles will receive a letter via First Class Mail asking them to schedule a service appointment an Authorized BMW Center. Customers with further questions should contact BMW Customer Relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email customer.relations@bmwna.com.

Bmw and Mercedes-Benz bringing smaller models in the United States

The vehicles that BMW and Mercedes-Benz will bring to the US will be based on platforms smaller than those currently being sold there. What BMW will bring is a new front-wheel-drive family of cars in the UKL class. UKL is an abbreviation in German for lower-compact-class cars.

Last week at the Paris Auto Show, Ian Robertson, BMW AG board member for sales and marketing, told Automotive News that it will be a “relatively big segment” because there are several body styles being offered.

He didn’t provide details about the body styles BMW is developing but he confirmed that during the launch in the US, the vehicles will have a four-cylinder engine. Robertson also said that the new family of small cars will be introduced within the next few years, before the launch of BMW’s Megacity electric car that’s expected in 2013.

According to European media reports, BMW is planning at least three variants. Starting in 2012, Mercedes-Benz will send three compact fwd vehicles to the US including one that has an alternative drivetrain. The vehicle that would go on sale first is either a compact SUV or a coupe derived from the B-class platform. Both will not be wearing a B-class badge. Joachim Schmidt, executive vice president for sales, declined to reveal the names of these planned vehicles.

The US market will not be receiving the smaller hatchback that will start selling in Europe at the end of next year as an A-class model. Schmidt added that Mercedes will be adding a compact van featuring its electric drivetrains later.

Details and timing have yet to be determined but what Mercedes is considering is a fuel cell model or an electric with a range-extending gasoline engine. To fit the battery, the van will require a second floor. Schmidt said that with this method, the battery will not be encroaching on interior room. The fuel cell van is also expected to help Mercedes comply with strict US fuel economy standards for the 2016 model year.
